Hotels Urged to Be Different
Hotels in the Midlands are being urged to be more innovative to combat the drop in business following fears of a recession. Hospitality software company Amateo has called for hoteliers to take immediate steps to fight off threats to their business.
The foot and mouth crisis and last month's terrorist attacks in the USA have also contributed to the fears in the industry.
Matthew Maxwell, chief executive of Amateo, said competition between hotel chains and independent hotels would intensify as the market shrank.
He added: "The current business for hotels in the Midlands had already suffered to foot and mouth and the recent turn of events has been the final nail in the coffin for many hoteliers.
"Discounts on hotels are being offered at up to 70 percent. Discounting will raise occupancy levels to an extent but it will not produce sufficient revenue to survive in the long term." Published in Regional Evening Telegraph - UK, October 17th 2001
